Burkina Faso: How to Defeat Terrorism!

One of the modes of financing terrorism in Burkina Faso, the victim of attacks by jihadists in recent years, is well known. It is the president, Roch Marc Christian Kaboré, who says it himself.

Head of State Roch Marc Christian Kaboré said he had received a comprehensive study in the form of a report from Moïse Napon, President of the Economic and Social Council (CES) of Burkina Faso.

Although structurally institutional, this report nevertheless touches on a very sensitive subject which impacts the life of the Burkinabè. President Kaboré explains: “The President of the Economic and Social Council (CES) Moïse Napon, gave me on February 23, 2021, the public report for the year 2020 of the institution. This report is devoted to money laundering as a source of terrorist financing”.

The word is out! Terrorism or more exactly its financing. For almost 10 years, Ouagadougou and the hinterland have been the victims of terrorist attacks by jihadist groups, sometimes having made allegiance to Al Qaeda, sometimes to Boko Haram, or constituting their own identity.

This document therefore arrived at the right time, which prompted President Kaboré to say that he “congratulates the president of the CES and the entire college of advisers, for this work which relates to a major issue in the fight against terrorism and crime in our country”.

Roch Marc Christian Kaboré reelected in the first round with 57.87% of the vote (CENI)!

The ESC was not satisfied with bombastic speeches, it also identified ways of solving what the Burkinabé presidency recognizes: “At the end of the analysis, the Economic and Social Council formulated recommendations to the attention of President Roch Marc Christian Kaboré to put an end to the practice of financing terrorism”.

For his part, Moïse Napon (CES) stressed that this “this report talks about money laundering often used to finance terrorism and the idea is to see how to manage to dry up the sources of terrorist financing”.

In a less prosaic way, it is a question of using methods likely to reduce the use of banknotes and cash and to initiate a concertation of all the actors in the search for solutions.

Because it is a fact, since 2015, Burkina Faso has not only had to face the terrorist attacks, it must also manage the consequences which ensue, in particular the numerous victims and the thousands of displaced persons throughout its national territory.
