Following a week of skyrocketing coronavirus reports in the United States, authorities have given a stern message this 4th of July: miss the parties.
When you really need to leave, wear a mask, wash your hands, and preserve your social distance. But if you decide to host, try to keep the celebrations outside and save the partygoers’ details for potential contact monitoring, if possible.
Coronavirus outbreaks are on the rise in 36 states over the weekend; with California, Arizona, Texas, and Florida both reporting high numbers of new outbreaks this week.
Over 129,000 people have been killed and more than 2.7 million infected in the US since the start of the pandemic, according to Johns Hopkins University. And for the third consecutive day on Friday, the number of new cases reached 50,000 nationwide.
Amid the grim holidays, people yearning for some normality are preparing barbecues, dives in lakes, and parties to watch fireworks. But some of them are finding beaches in Miami and Los Angeles shut, tubing in Texas rivers forbidden, and some town festivities mostly on live streams.
Absent stringent protection precautions, health officials warn that a holiday weekend could lead to a flood of new outbreaks that could overload hospitals. To stop a public health tragedy, they warn residents to wear masks, avoid bars and busy areas, and reduce interacting with residents outside their houses.
