The coronavirus has landed on the continent of Africa. The transmission of the virus is unavoidable and the shortage of medical equipment and medical personnel could lead to a death rate three times higher than in European countries.
To help Africa, which has been affected by the coronavirus epidemic, the NGO Alima has launched a campaign to appeal for donations called #OxygenforAfrica on social networks. Several professional athletes and women have given their support to fight this epidemic.
Created in 2009, this NGO fears the arrival of Covid-19, which affects 51 of the 54 states of the African continent, “in countries whose health systems are among the most fragile in the world, with resources far less than those mobilized in Europe, China or the United States”.
As the spread of this virus is inevitable, the death rate could be three times higher. The campaign “OxygenForAfrica” is designed to raise money to buy oxygen generators.
“It’s just a matter of days before the virus spreads further on the African continent,” Alima’s managing director Augustin Augier warned. In sub-Saharan Africa, health systems are already very fragile. If the epidemic spreads in these regions, we will have to expect à̀ a much higher mortality rate than in the rest of the world. We need oxygen concentrators. This is a solution that can be deployed immediately in all our fields of intervention. We need help.”
To help, an appeal for donations has been launched and relayed by many athletes like football player Aurélien Chedjou, boxer Souleymane Cissokho or basketball player Amath M’Baye on social networks with the hashtag #OxygenForAfrica
The virus is capable of attacking everyone.
Everyone will fight the virus.
We ‘re trying to scramble for air,
To react to the epidemic of COVID-19 in Africa.
